Weeks after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles in a cost-cutting move, veteran defensive tackle Mike Patterson could be reunited with Cullen Jenkins as the Giants look to improve their front four by adding another castoff from their NFC East rivals.

Patterson, a 2005 first-round pick of the Eagles, played alongside Jenkins for two seasons in Philadelphia. On Feb. 25, the Eagles released both Patterson and Jenkins on the same day after the hiring of defensive coordinator Billy Davis earlier in the month. The Giants are scheduled to meet with Patterson and former Panthers defensive end Eric Norwood this week, according to multiple reports.

In 2011, Patterson suffered a seizure in training camp and was diagnosed with Cerebral arteriovenous malformation, an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins in the brain. Patterson, 6-1, 300, still recorded 35 tackles in 15 starts before undergoing brain surgery last January.

Despite an optimistic prognosis from doctors early in Patterson's recovery, the Eagles placed him on the non-football injury/reserve list in September. Patterson made his season debut in November at New Orleans and appeared in five games in a reserve capacity. In mid-December, the Eagles shut Patterson down for the season after he contacted pneumonia and was briefly hospitalized. As part of Patterson's visit he is scheduled to undergo a physical, according to the New York Daily News.

Norwood, 6-1, 280, had 1.0 sack and 24 tackles with the Panthers from 2010-2011. After spending last season with the Virginia Destroyers of the UFL, Norwood agreed to terms with the San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League earlier this month. The Giants are also scheduled to meet with former Cowboys receiver Anthony Armstrongand former Redskins running back Tim Hightower.

A defensive line that excelled during the Giants' two Super Bowl runs struggled to create pressure off the edge and close gaps on the outside against the run in 2012. The Giants ranked 23rd in sacks per pass attempt, according to NFLGSIS.com and ranked 26th on defending runs along the right sideline (6.15 yards per carry). Perry Fewell's defense also ranked 25th on stopping runs toward the left sideline (6.23 ypc).
