Ravens nose tackle Terrence Cody recently underwent hip surgery and is expected to miss Baltimore's offseason training activities, according to the Baltimore Sun.

However, the Ravens do expect Cody to return in time for training camp. Baltimore has three OTA sessions this offseason (May 21-23, May 29-31, June 4-7) and a mandatory minicamp (June 11-13), all of which Cody is expected to miss.

Cody's hip may have played a part in his struggles last season: After starting all 16 games in 2011 for Baltimore, he only started three games for the Ravens in 2012. Cody, Baltimore's second round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft was eventually replaced in the starting lineup by veteran defensive tackle Ma'ake Kemoeatu.

The Ravens run defense struggled last season, after finishing second in the NFL in 2011, the team dropped all the way to 20th in 2012.

General manager Ozzie Newsome understandably wasn't thrilled with Baltimore's defensive line play, which is a big reason why the Ravens went out and signed defensive linemen Marcus Spears and Chris Canty during free agency. "The base of a good defense is to be good along the defensive line," Newsome said after Spears signed. "We didn't play to our standards last season."
