Report: Matt Barkley to hold private workout for Cardinals

The Cardinals just landed their starting quarterback in Carson Palmer. They gave him a two-year deal worth $16 million, including $10 million guaranteed.

Drew Stanton is the top backup, with Brian Hoyer and Ryan Lindley also on the roster. There's no definitive “quarterback of the future” in the bunch.

That could explain why the Cardinals, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, will hold a private workout on the USC campus Saturday with quarterback Matt Barkley.

Arizona is expected to take an offensive lineman with the No. 7 overall pick, but Barkley might slip to the second round.

Barkley performed well overall at his pro day last week, with only five of his 60-plus passes hitting the ground. Several of his deep balls wobbled.

While there is optimism Palmer can spark the offense in Arizona, the Cardinals obviously are thinking ahead. Palmer is 33 and admits he's "only got a couple of shots left."
