Buccaneers cut ties with QB Dan Orlovsky and RB D.J. Ware

If Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman is going to have competition this offseason, it's not going to come from Dan Orlovsky. The Buccaneers released their 2012 backup quarterback on Thursday, along with running back D.J. Ware.

The two moves will free up $2.35 million in salary cap space for the Buccaneers, who are now sitting on a large pile of money. Tampa Bay now has $27.6 million in cap space, second only to Cleveland's $33.8 million.

After stints in Detroit, Houston and Indianapolis, Orlovsky signed a two-year contract with the Bucs in March 2012, but only lasted one season. In his only appearance last year, Orlovsky managed not to safety himself (video below), while throwing for 51 yards in a 41-0 loss to New Orleans. Orlovsky's departure leaves Freeman and former University of Minnesota star Adam Weber as the only quarterbacks on the Bucs roster.

As for Ware, he was one of only three running backs on Tampa Bay's roster in 2012 that received five or more carries. Ware finished last season with 11 carries for 51 yards. However, with the recent signing of Brian Leonard and a bevy of running backs already on the roster -- Doug Martin, LeGarrette Blount, Michael Smith -- Ware became expendable.

Ware originally signed with the Bucs in September after being cut by the New York Giants.
