Eric Wright restructures deal to stick with Buccaneers in 2013

The Buccaneers are very much in limbo with their current cornerback situation. But they got a little bit of assurance that they'll have someone to play in the defensive backfield next year as the team announced it's bringing back Eric Wright on a restructured one-year deal.

Wright was going to make a lot of money heading into 2013, but because he tested positive for Adderall in 2012 and was suspended four games, the Buccaneers yanked his $7.75 million guarantee.

The cornerback filed a grievance against the team but lost the case and was basically forced to come back to Tampa Bay on a restructured deal.

A restructured contract always looked like the end solution for the two sides; Wright was initially part of a big haul for the Buccaneers in free agency last offseason but didn't pan out quite as well as Carl Nicks or Vincent Jackson.

There was some thought that Tampa Bay might simply release Wright, but with the slow market out there and the Bucs desperately needing defensive backs, it's logical for the two sides to redo a one-year deal.

Tampa's still got work to do in the secondary, although at this point most folks believe they'll end up trading for Darrelle Revis. Revis and Wright would make a substantially improved combo from the direction the Bucs were heading, and it's a good bet that they'll look to add a rookie (or two) through the draft as well.

Wright won't guarantee an improvement for Tampa this year, but he should be motivated on his single-year deal.
