Scheduled to stand trial Monday, former Bears and Cowboys receiver Sam Hurd will plead guilty Thursday to a federal drug conspiracy charge, his attorney told a Dallas TV station.

Hurd faces a maximum sentence of 10 years to life in prison and a $10 million fine, but also could receive probation.

Attorney Jay Ethington told WFAA-TV that Hurd, 27, will plead guilty to conspiracy to possess cocaine and marijuana with intent to distribute. The government originally charged Hurd with six counts, alleging he tried to set up a massive drug-dealing operation, then recently consolidated the case to one charge.

In December 2011, while playing for the Bears, Hurd was arrested outside a Chicago-area steakhouse. He allegedly accepted a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover officer and told the cop he wanted to buy up to 10 kilos of coke and a half-ton of marijuana per week to distribute in the Chicago area, court documents show. Hurd said he was willing to pay $25,000 per kilo and $450 per pound of pot, the documents say.

Hurd is being held in jail without bond. His cousin and another co-defendant pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against Hurd, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The paper said that during a July 2011 arrest of four men in Denton, Texas, police discovered drug-related texts between Hurd and two of the suspects. In one text, Hurd wrote that he “badly needed drugs for his drug-starved customers,” according to court records the paper cited.

Hurd spent his first five seasons in Dallas before signing a three-year, $5.15 million deal with the Bears that included a $1.35 million signing bonus. He made 53 career catches.
