Saints agree to terms with 2009 No. 2 overall pick OT Jason Smith

New Orleans has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former No. 2 overall pick, offensive tackle Jason Smith, the team announced Thursday.

The move should allow coach Sean Payton to sleep slightly better at night. Payton has been saying since mid-March that improving the Saints' pass rush and finding a left tackle are two things that have been keeping him awake this offseason. Smith can play left and right tackle.

The Saints have been in the market for a left tackle since Jermon Bushrod left for Chicago on the first day of free agency. Smith won't completely fill the void left by Bushrod, but he'll add some serviceable depth.

Smith has played in 45 career games, with 26 starts since 2009 when the Rams made him the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft. The Rams traded Smith to the Jets in August, the former Baylor star lasted four months in New York before being cut in February.

It may not be fair to call Smith a bust yet, but he's getting uncomfortably close to it. Since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the only three No. 2 overall picks with less career starts than Smith's 26 are Ryan Leaf (Chargers, 1998) with 21 starts, Steve Niehaus (Seahawks, 1976) with 20 and Charles Rogers (Lions, 2003) with nine. Robert Griffin III is technically also on the list, but barring injury, he should pass Smith sometime next season.
