Former Jaguars coach Mularkey: Tebow would have been a distraction

Maybe Tim Tebow is a distraction.

Former NFL quarterback and four-time Pro Bowler Jeff Garcia said Friday that Tebow's presence in New York 'brings distraction' to the Jets. Now former Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey is piling on too. In an interview with Pro Football Talk, Mularkey said one of the reasons Jacksonville didn't trade for Tebow last offseason is because of the distraction it would have created.

"It would have been a distraction," Mularkey said. "If Blaine [Gabbert] would have failed early, it would have been the call to bring Tebow in and that's not something you want for you football team. Any kind of distraction."

If Tebow had landed in Jacksonville, he wouldn't have played quarterback. Mularkey said that Gabbert was entrenched as the starter. "We were going to go with Blaine Gabbert," Mularkey said. "We were going to find ways to get the ball to [Tebow], but we were going to go with Gabbert."

The 'going-with-Gabbert' strategy didn't work out well for Mularkey. Gabbert went 1-9 in 10 starts before being place on injured reserve in November with an elbow problem. Jacksonville was 2-14 and Mularkey was fired after one season with the team.

Tebow might be a distraction, but he can still brag that he has more playoff wins in the past two seasons than the Jaguars and Jets combined.
