Vikings consider moving Joe Webb to receiver

Joe Webb's only start last season came at Lambeau Field in the playoffs and it wasn't pretty.

It wouldn't be fair to judge Webb on that 24-10 loss alone. But with that performance fresh in their minds, the Vikings signed Matt Cassel last month to be Christian Ponder's backup.

Coach Leslie Frazier said at the time there were no plans to move Webb to wideout, his expected position when he was drafted in the sixth round in 2010.

On Saturday, Frazier changed course, telling the Star-Tribune that Webb might indeed switch positions.

“[Webb] is such a talented athlete that we want to make sure that we're doing the right thing by him and our team, as well,” Frazier said. “That's something we'll continue to discuss as we go forward.”

Webb (6-4, 220) caught 30 passes as a sophomore at UAB, averaging 15.3 yards per catch with three touchdowns. He moved to quarterback the next season but worked out at wideout on his pro day. He clocked a 4.43 in the 40, bench-pressed 225 pounds 21 times, and had a 42.5-inch vertical jump.

With the Vikes thin at receiver behind Greg Jennings, Webb's best chance to get on the field appears to be catching passes, not throwing them.

Webb started one game in 2011 at receiver, catching a 9-yard pass on five targets.

His most memorable performance at quarterback came in his first start at the end of the 2010 season. Filling in for the injured Brett Favre, Webb threw for 195 yards and ran for a touchdown as Minnesota upset heavily favored Philadelphia in a game delayed two days by snow.
