Russell Wilson and Trey Anastasio are trying to make sweet music in Seattle. (USATSI)
Phish lead singer and guitarist Trey Anastasio is currently touring the U.S. solo (the band will be out later) and he opened up his tour in Seattle. And while he was there, he decided to set up a little social-media experiment featuring Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
You see, Phish has a popular song named Wilson and whenever they play the tune, fans in the crowd chant "WIL-son!" during certain sections of the song. (Phish fans are pretty die-hard and know when to chant certain things. If you like Phish, you know this. If you don't like Phish, well, you probably don't.) And before playing Wilson in Seattle, Anastasio tried, via the always awesome JamBase.com, to convince Seahawks fans to chant the same thing whenever Russell takes the field in 2013.
“Now you guys gotta help me with this. First of all, it's a thrill to be here in Seattle, playing. This is how you have to help me out: I wanted to do this all last football season but I don't really know how we're going to pull this off. "We" I say because we're going to do this together," Trey said. "But by next season, every time Russell Wilson walks onto the field…we want the organ player...I think you know where I'm going with this - you guys gotta help me out somehow. Social media – and tell your friends! Somebody has to make this happen because for 30 years we've been waiting for someone with the name to make Wilson be a sports star. So I'll play the song - you guys make it happen!"
The clip above is from Trey's opening show on his solo tour. To get a better example of how booming the chant is, check out Phish playing Wilson during their 2010 New Year's Eve run at Madison Square Garden.
Two thumping double-E notes indicate it's time to cheer before the song begins and the same thing happens in the middle of the song around the 2:15 mark.
I have no idea how this is going to become a "thing" -- maybe the Seahawks invite Phish to sing the national anthem at a show and they stick around to play Wilson for the intro? It doesn't really seem like Russell's bag (non AC/DC version) to put the limelight on himself, but this would be a pretty boss thing to see happen.
Maybe here's the best idea: When Trey and the band go out on tour this spring and summer, get the crowd to chant "RUSS-ell!" and then "WIL-son!" so the song really gets matched up with the quarterback.
Eventually it could catch on, Seahawks fans would get used to hearing the two beats and then chanting Wilson, just like Phish fans have.
Either way, it's clear that this little idea is blowing up quickly. Wilson (Russell that is) himself retweeted a JamBase tweet about the original video:
And then about 3 p.m. ET, this tweet caused your helping, friendly NFL blogger to split open and melt:
