As Geno Smith waited -- and waited and waited -- for his name to be called Thursday night, the West Virginia quarterback got some encouragement from Aaron Rodgers.
The Packers quarterback tweeted:
Hang in there Geno, "good things come to those who wait" -Paul Tagliabue— Aaron Rodgers (@AaronRodgers12) April 26, 2013
For much of the leadup to the draft, Smith was projected as the top quarterback. But the Bills took Florida State's E.J. Manuel at No. 16 overall, and no other quarterback was taken in the first round. Smith reportedly made a hasty exit from Radio City Music Hall toward the end of the first round.
Rodgers has said he'll never forget then-Commissioner Tagliabue's comment to him at the 2005 draft, when Rodgers fell to Green Bay at No. 24 overall. That obviously worked out for both sides.
"That [comment] didn't mean a lot to me at the time. I mean, I didn't think of anything other than 'Thank God I got picked,'" Rodgers told CBSSports.com in 2009. "But I truly believe it now. If you're patient and wait for the opportunity and make the most of it, good things will happen."
