Many, many people thought the Jets and Eagles might take a quarterback in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. That obviously didn't happen, and now there's a pile of quarterbacks available for the teams picking early in the second round.
Like, say, the Jets and Eagles! And, according to Gil Brandt of NFL.com, sources "expect" those two teams to select quarterbacks with their early picks in the second round.
Now, per usual with any sort of rumor or report or whatever is floating out there right now, let's take this with a grain of salt. That's not knocking Brandt's reporting or anything. It's just that if the Eagles and Jets aren't taking quarterbacks at the top of the second round, wouldn't they love teams who want to take quarterbacks to trade up ahead of them and do so?
Of course, they would. The Jaguars, holding the 33rd overall pick -- and the first pick of the second round -- would also love to see someone try to trade up in order to acquire a quarterback and hand off some extra picks.
Having said all that, it makes total sense for these two teams to take quarterbacks. And the one quarterback they've both been linked to is Geno Smith. Unfortunately, there's only so much Geno to go around, which means we could potentially see two quarterbacks go early in the second round.
So, yeah, it makes total sense to see quarterbacks come off early in the second round of this draft. But we thought we'd see something similar in the first round as well, and look how that turned out.
