Bucs trade LeGarrette Blount to Pats for Jeff Demps, 229th pick

With the emergence of rookie Doug Martin for the Buccaneers last year, LeGarrette Blount -- who had rushed for 1,000 yards only two seasons before -- suddenly was a large, irrelevant, one-dimensional running back on the Tampa Bay roster.

And now he'll get a chance to start over in New England -- which has traded running back Jeff Demps and a seventh-round draft pick (No. 229 overall) to Tampa Bay for Blount.

Blount signed a one-year, $1.75-million deal last month, but the Buccaneers clearly weren't all that interested in keeping him around.

Demps, meanwhile, signed with the Patriots before last season, but the former Florida track star spent the entire season on injured reserve. He has also said he still wants to compete in track and field. And with the Patriots acquiring Leon Washington in the offseason, perhaps New England just didn't want to deal with the uncertainty surrounding Demps.

In 2010, Blount rushed for a surprising 1,007 yards as a rookie. But with Martin's emergence last year, Blount only carried the ball 41 times for 151 yards. It probably won't be easy for Blount to make the 2013 New England squad, considering the Patriots already have Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Washington on the roster.
