Spanos: Chargers did not seriously discuss Tomlinson comeback

LaDainian Tomlinson caused a stir over the weekend when he said Chargers brass wanted him to come out of retirement. And not just in a figurehead role, but to get meaningful carries this season.

On Monday, Chargers executive vice president John Spanos downplayed the conversation in question, which took place at the combine in Indianapolis.

"When you see L.T., and you see the kind of shape he's in, and the first time meeting (coach) Mike (McCoy) and (general manager) Tom (Telesco), obviously knowing what he's meant to our city lends itself to the first question, 'Hey, nice to meet you, you got any carries left in you?'" Spanos said in a call-in appearance on XEPRS-AM.

"There was a friendly discussion, and he made it clear he's retired and that's all it was. It's funny it's getting a lot of attention because I can tell having been there it really wasn't that big of a deal."

Spanos said the conversation didn't progress beyond that.

"It was literally just a quick second, it was a comment and answer and that was it. It never really had a chance to develop beyond that. So it was just an initial introduction, and a simple question, and that's all it really was to be honest with you."

Spanos' recollection differs from Tomlinson's. The Chargers legend, who turns 34 in June, said team officials “kept talking about it, and I realized it was real. They said, 'You can come back and carry it 10 or 12 times a game. We'd like to have you here.' "

Tomlinson, who last played in 2011 for the Jets, signed a one-day contract to retire as a Charger last June. He says his decision to retire is final.
