Browns coach Chud: 'Too early' to commit to Brandon Weeden at QB

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

The Browns elected not to select a quarterback in the 2013 NFL Draft. As such, the only addition to their depth chart is Jason Campbell. With the departure of Colt McCoy, that leaves second-year quarterback Brandon Weeden as a pretty, pretty, pretty obvious choice to start Week 1.

But Cleveland coach Rob Chudzinski, in an interview with 92.3 The Fan's Bull and Fox, that it's "too early" for him to commit to Weeden as his starter for 2013.

“I feel good about where we're at right now,” Chudzinski said. “He's been working with the first group and we'll just see as we go forward. We're [working] on air right now so it's very early but I do like what I've seen so far and we'll see how it goes.

"Right now it's too early to say anything one way or another."

Competition is a big buzzword for NFL coaches these days despite obvious setups at certain positions (thanks, Pete Carroll) but, uh, is this really a thing?

It's Weeden -- a first-round pick in 2012 and possible franchise quarterback -- against Campbell -- a former first-round pick and no one's idea of a franchise quarterback -- for a young team that needs to decide if a future investment in a quarterback is required.

Do I think Weeden will work out as "the guy" in Cleveland? No, but you have to give him a shot. You can't realistically expect to bench him and play Campbell ... right?

“I expect both of these guys to compete,” Chudzinski said. “I don't know any other way. Anybody that's on a team is competing from my standpoint. We want to put these guys in a situation, give them every chance to succeed and we'll see how that all plays out.

“I'm hoping that the best man wins the job and that he gives us a chance to win."

That man will be Weeden. You can bet your life on it. Chud and Co. want -- nay, need -- to see what he can do in their offensive system.

On the bright side, at least this isn't as transparent as last year's charade of a quarterback competition between McCoy and Weeden. We all saw how that worked out.
