Dennis Pitta signs Ravens restricted free agent tender

When CBS Sports Jason La Canfora whipped up an excellent piece on potential breakout players for the 2013 NFL season, one of the top names that he mentioned was Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta.

Pitta's potential breakout is much closer to a reality simply because he'll be playing: the Ravens announced on Monday that the tight end had signed his restricted free-agent tender.

Baltimore previously gave Pitta a second-round tender, which means the tight end will be paid $2.023 million in the coming season.

Pitta, a fourth-round pick out of BYU in the 2010 NFL Draft, had a career year last season, catching 61 passes for 669 yards and seven touchdowns.

He was an even bigger beast in the playoffs, catching 14 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns.

In a season that could net him some serious cash, Pitta's in a good position to blow up: Anquan Boldin was traded to the 49ers in the offseason, leaving just Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones as Joe Flacco's top targets.

The Ravens have Ray Rice to rely on, but Flacco will still be chucking the ball plenty in 2013. And it wouldn't be stunning if a large number of targets featured the newly-signed tight end.
