Former New York Jets quarterback David Garrard might be retired, but that doesn't mean he won't be in training camp with the Jets this summer. The team has offered Garrard, who retired on Wednesday, the opportunity to attend training camp as a coaching intern, according to USA Today.

"The Jets offered me the chance to come back if I want to take a shot at that coaching thing with an internship in training camp," Garrard said. "I told them I'd talk with my wife about it, so I could still work with those guys. It's definitely something I'm considering.

Garrard also said there were no external factors -- like the Jets drafting Geno Smith -- in his decision to retire. His knee just couldn't handle the NFL grind anymore, "It was strictly my knee and the way that I was performing," Garrard said. "When my knee was swollen every fourth day or so, I couldn't do anything. That was the deciding factor. It was hard, but I held back the tears."

Even though he's now out of the Jets quarterback race, Garrard still couldn't say who he thought would have the edge to win the starting job: Smith or Mark Sanchez. "I really can't say who has the upper hand. The competition is truly open," Garrard said.
