Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of aggravated assault and criminal trespass. Washington has been accused by his ex-girlfriend, the Associated Press reported.

The former second-round pick out of TCU has been free since posting $2,400 bond following his May 3 arrest. According to Phoenix police, Washington's ex-girlfriend says he grabbed her by the throat and shoved her to the ground following an argument at her apartment.

Washington, who signed multiyear contract extension before last season, was suspended in April for the first four games of the 2013 season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

At the time, Washington spoke of taking responsibility for the suspension.

"I was always taught that when you make a mistake, you admit it, learn from it and face whatever consequences there are,” he said in a statement released by the team. "I take full responsibility and I understand that I let down my teammates, the organization and fans.

"I apologize for that and promise that no one will work harder to make up for it."

On May 10, the Cardinals signed linebacker Karlos Dansby to a one-year contract to provide depth during Washington's absence. Dansby, who spent the last three years with the Dolphins, played in Arizona from 2004-2010.
