Lawyer: Mike Goodson had nothing to do with gun or drugs in car

Mike Goodson didn't know there were drugs in the car, the gun didn't belong to him, and he only recently met the guy arrested with him. That was the version Goodson's lawyer put forth Tuesday regarding last week's arrest, saying the Jets running back will plead not guilty to five gun and drug charges.

The attorney, Tony Fusco, told USA Today that Goodson “was out partying. He was drunk, there's no question about that. But he wasn't driving, and the gun and drugs did not belong to him."

Goodson and the driver, Garant Evans, were arrested about 3 a.m. Friday after New Jersey State Police found their SUV stopped in the left-center lane of Route 80, police said. Searching the vehicle, officers found a gun and marijuana, police said.

Goodson was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, possession of an unlawful handgun, possession of a loaded gun and possession of hollow-point rounds.

Following the arrest, Goodson was taken to a hospital via ambulance because of his level of intoxication, the paper reported.

Fusco told USA Today the car was not registered to Goodson or Evans, and that the two met just three weeks ago. Evans' lawyer, Joe Afflitto, told the paper he had no information on the gun's registration and that he had not yet spoken to his client.

Jets owner Woody Johnson said the team was in fact-finding mode about the arrest. He added, curiously, that the often dysfunctional Jets are all about “truth, justice and the American way.”

Speedy and elusive on the field, Goodson signed a three-year, $6.9 million deal in March and was expected to be a nice backfield complement to the bruising Chris Ivory. Goodson reportedly attended the start of OTAs on Monday but did not practice with the team.
