Raiders top pick D.J. Hayden has abdominal surgery, not heart-related

When the Raiders selected cornerback D.J. Hayden with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, they took a gamble on a guy who suffered a major injury in his final season of college and hadn't been on the field since November. That's why it's particularly scary to hear that Hayden has been hospitalized with an abdominal injury before the season has even thought about beginning.

Here's the good news: CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports the abdominal issue is a "relatively minor procedure" and that it isn't related to the heart issue that Hayden suffered in November.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen spoke with the media on Tuesday and offered up a much less specific account when he said the Raiders "can't rule out [a connection between the two injuries]."

“Right now, I don't know the correlation to it,” Allen said via Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle. “But we don't anticipate it being an issue.”

Obviously, La Canfora's news is much more encouraging.

La Canfora also reports that Hayden is still recovering in the hospital but is doing fine, according to team sources, and is expected to make a full recovery well in time for training camp.

This is one of the issues with drafting an injury-prone player early on: As soon as something even remotely medical-related pops up, there's a major concern with his past. It's fantastic news, then, that Hayden's issue doesn't have to do with his heart.
