Confusing Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith with Buccaneers wide receiver Steve Smith won't be a problem in your fantasy draft this year. Tampa Bay's Smith has retired. The six-year veteran announced his retirement on Wednesday after less than two months with the Buccaneers.

"I've been blessed to play the game that I love at the highest level for the past six years," Smith said, via the Bucs team website. "I will always cherish my time with the New York Giants and our Super Bowl victory in 2007. I also want to thank the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers organizations for the opportunities they gave me. This was not an easy decision, but it's the right decision for me at this time."

Smith has struggled with injuries since 2010. The veteran receiver hasn't played in more than nine games in any of the past three seasons.

However, when Smith was healthy, he produced. In 2009, the former USC star caught 107 passes for the Giants, a number that still stands as the franchise record. Smith's 1,220 yards receiving that season stands as the third-highest total in team history.

Smith was a 2007 second-round pick of the Giants who didn't see much action during the regular season of his rookie year. After only catching eight passes in the regular season, Smith exploded in the playoffs -- catching 14 passes in four games -- including a five-catch, 50-yard game in the Giants' Super Bowl XLII win over then-undefeated New England.

After four seasons in New York, Smith signed with Philadelphia in 2011 and spent one season with the Eagles before signing with St. Louis in 2012. In his final season in the NFL, Smith caught 14 passes for 131 yards for the Rams.

Smith's six-year career ends with 245 receptions for 2,641 yards and 12 touchdowns. Smith's 220 career receptions with the Giants rank as the 19th-most in team history.
