Rex Ryan on naming Jets starting QB: 'I don't think we're close'

In March, more than a month before the Jets used a second-round pick on quarterback Geno Smith , new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg conceded that embattled Mark Sanchez would "probably have just a bit of a leg up" in the competition for the starting gig.

By May, Mornhinweg said the job could be decided by training camp, but on Wednesday, coach Rex Ryan conceded that time frame might be unrealistic.

“I don't think we're close to that right now,” Ryan said via the New York Daily News. “The process is, you don't have to make that move. But until we feel 100 percent comfortable with that decision, then we'll just leave it to competition.”

With David Garrard's recent retirement and Tim Tebow's release, said competition includes Smith, Sanchez, Matt Simms and Greg McElroy.

As for when, exactly, a decision might be reached, Ryan offered this explanation, via NewsDay: "For me to make the decision, to say the competition is over, it's going to have to be 100 percent clear to me. And if it's not, then we're going to keep competing until whenever."

And then, perhaps to keep from crying, Ryan made a joke:

At least we think Ryan was joking.
