A cousin of the late Kasandra Perkins, the woman murdered by former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, was awarded custody of the couple's nine-month-old daughter, Zoey Belcher, on Thursday, the Associated Press reported.
Sophie Perkins, a maternal cousin to Kasandra, was named primary guardian of the child over Cheryl Belcher, the former football player's mother. Cheryl Belcher had been staying at the couple's home in Kansas City when Kasandra was shot and killed.
According to Fox4 in Kansas City, “the court said its decision was based on the premise that Sophie Perkins serves the best interest for stable and permanent placement.”
On Dec. 1, Jovan Belcher killed Kasandra, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and took his own life in the parking lot.
