Colts WR LaVon Brazill suspended 4 games for substance abuse

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

Colts receiver LaVon Brazill has been suspended for the first four games of the 2013 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

While Brazill made only 11 catches and one touchdown during his rookie season last year, his absence makes things a little more difficult for quarterback Andrew Luck, who now will be without the player who could have been his No. 4 receiver.

Brazill is eligible for the preseason. But once the regular season begins, he can't return to the team until Sept. 30.

In March, owner Jim Irsay let it be known that the team was looking to upgrade at the receiver position -- the Colts did so by adding Darrius Heyward-Bey -- and said Brazill “must develop a strong commitment to his craft."

More from an Indianapolis Star story this month: “The Colts especially need Brazill to step up. He finished with just 11 receptions for 186 yards and one touchdown as a rookie. In an attempt to accelerate Brazill's growth, the team moved him across the locker room. His new neighbor: [veteran Reggie] Wayne.

As the Tribune Star notes, Brazill's suspension could help move along receivers Griff Whalen and Nate Palmer, both of whom have had strong offseasons.

In other news from Monday, Giants receiver Brandon Collins also was suspended four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
