Report: NFL could determine Josh Brent's status before camp

Josh Brent, who was charged with intoxication manslaughter after a December single-car accident that took the life of passenger and teammate Jerry Brown, remains a member of the Cowboys, though his status on the roster is expected to be determined before the team reports for training camp in Oxnard, Calif., on July 19, an NFL spokesman told ESPNDallas.com.

The Cowboys are preparing as if Brent will not play in 2013 but are waiting on an official ruling from the league.

Brent, who plays nose tackle and appeared in 12 games last season, was jailed in late June after failing his second drug test in less than a month. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins said at the time that he wasn't surprised Brent failed the drug tests.

"Addictions are very hard to overcome, and we see this on a daily basis," Watkins said during a radio interview. "And so this is par for the course. Obviously, Josh Brent has an issue with alcohol, and you just can't one day decide that you're going to stop using it. So I think he's struggling with that. So I'm not surprised with the outcome of what's going on with this case. I just hope that at the end of it, justice will be served for Mr. Brent and the citizens of Dallas County."

Brent was released from jail last Sunday. Now his fate rests with the league office -- and beyond that, the legal system.
