Joe Flacco's brother gives up baseball to pursue NFL dream

In February, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco earned MVP honors in Super Bowl XLVII. Until a few months ago, his younger brother, Mike, made his living as a professional baseball player in the Baltimore and Boston minor league organizations. Now, Mike is planning to switch sports and give football a shot; he recently enrolled at Division II New Haven University where he will play tight end.

"He's 6-6, 250 and can run. You can use those guys," New Haven coach Pete Rossomando told "We worked him out. We were able to watch him run around. He's very raw, and he needs some seasoning to get to that next level. But if he does the things we ask, the sky is the limit for him." reports that Mike Flacco toyed with the idea of giving the NFL a go before opting for college. Given that he's 26 -- and hasn't played football since high school -- he'll still need to fast-track those NFL dreams.

"I want to be there with him," Mike said in January of his goal to play in the NFL with his older brother. "I see everything he's doing on the field and off the field, I want to do the same things. I'm just excited for Joe, excited to go down there. My stuff is my stuff. I've got to find my own ground. I know all of Joe's success may help me, but at the same time I have to find what I want to do."

As for Mike's football-playing future: For now it's at New Haven. Beyond that, we'll have to see.

"He was very sincere about wanting to be in a college atmosphere -- very sincere," Rossomando said of the younger Flacco. "Will we have him for four years? No. But is it realistic to say we'll have him for two or three years? Yeah."
