You know how, when you get to be about a decade out of high school or college, you look back at old photos and you think to yourself, “Seriously, what kind of moron was I?” It's either your hairstyle, your clothes, the friends you were hanging with, the kind of beer you were drinking, or -- in one NFL coach's case -- the kind of facial hair you were sporting.
As one, let us all rejoice in the natural beauty of the early 1980s.
Couple of things:
1) Well, we've figured out who will play the role of Kubiak in his biopic. Ben Affleck, obviously.
2) Kubiak was taken in the eighth round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the Broncos, where he spent his entire nine-year career backing up a pretty good quarterback in John Elway. But for being a career backup, Kubiak actually played a ton of games (and had three game-winning drives). Take a look, via Pro-Football-Reference.com.
3) Aside from his mustache -- which I couldn't love any more than I already do (seriously, if I have another child, I'm naming he/she after that ‘stache) -- Kubiak has a great head of hair. I've spent the past 10 minutes trying to think of an apt description for it. Fortunately, the Houston Press already nailed it, calling it, “wind tunnel-blown feathered hair.”
Unfortunately, this version of Gary Kubiak no longer exists. Now, he's the coach of a team that very well could be in contention for an AFC title. And he doesn't wear facial hair of any kind. But let's not forget the Kubiak of 31 years ago. Because that guy must have been freakin' awesome.
