The Buccaneers sent Eric Wright to the 49ers on Friday for a conditional late-round pick. On Monday, the 49ers returned Wright to the Bucs after the cornerback failed his physical. Hours later, Tampa Bay released Wright.

Had Wright passed his physical, he would have joined a secondary in San Francisco that included Carlos Rogers, Nnamdi Asomugha, Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver. Now, Wright is set to hit free agency, even with the Bucs facing the possibility of starting rookie cornerback Johnthan Banks opposite Darrelle Revis. Not helping Wright's case: He was reportedly arrested a week before the Bucs traded him.

Wright lasted just one season in Tampa, starting 10 games and registering one interception with seven passes defended. He signed a five-year, $35.2 million contract last offseason but missed four games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Last week, ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas wrote that, according to a source, "Wright's attitude in recent months didn't conform with what the team likes, and the Bucs would have released him if they were unable to trade him."

And that is exactly what happened.
