Colts agree to terms with first-rounder Bjoern Werner

By Ryan Wilson |

The Colts have agreed to terms with first-round pick Bjoern Werner, the team announced Wednesday. Werner, who was selected 24th overall out of Florida State, spent the offseason making the move from defensive end to outside linebacker, a conversation that's going well, according to coach Chuck Pagano.

It's a four-year deal worth $7.9 million, including $6.4 guaranteed, according to's Ian Rapoport. The contract includes offset language. (Which, in simple terms, means the Colts would be off the hook for the final year of Werner's contract should the two sides part ways and another team signs Werner to a contract of equal or greater value; put another way: it keeps a player from double-dipping, collecting salaries from his old and new teams simultaneously.) Werner will also receive a $346,000 roster bonus and a $100,000 workout bonus in 2016.

"He's exceeded all our expectations since he's been here," Colts coach Chuck Pagano said recently, "and he's a really good football player. The sky's the limit, he's ceiling is really high. He hasn't played that much football but he came in here, picked up the scheme really fast, he's a really knowledgeable guy … we put a lot on his plate -- we threw a lot at him -- and put him in a lot of different positions through the offseason programs.

"He played much like Robert (Mathis) and Dwight (Freeney) for such a long period of time -- he played with his hand in the dirt for most of his career at Florida State," Pagano continued. "For (Werner) to come in here and stand up and become a 3-4 outside linebacker -- watching him drop (into coverage), watching his ball skills, watching him rush the passer, all those things -- really exceeded all our expectations."
