QB Matt Ryan, Falcons agree to 5-year extension

Matt Ryan is the latest young franchise quarterback to cash in. Ryan and the Falcons are finalizing a five-year contract extension that, a source tells CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman, is worth $103 million and includes $59 million in guaranteed money.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen first reported the deal.

The current list of high-priced quarterbacks includes Joe Flacco ($20.1 million per year, on average), Drew Brees ($20M), Peyton Manning ($19.2M), Aaron Rodgers ($18.7M), Tony Romo ($17.1M), Matthew Stafford ($15.3M) and Eli Manning ($15.27M).

And now Ryan.

The former Boston College standout was the third-overall pick in the 2008 draft, taken 15 spots ahead of Flacco (who, incidentally, is the reigning Super Bowl MVP). Ryan led the Falcons to the playoffs as a rookie but has just a 1-4 postseason record over his career.

Still, he remains one of the league's best young passers, ranking fifth in FootballOutsiders.com's total value metric for quarterbacks in 2012. Looking at more conventional numbers, Ryan passed for 4,719 yards last season (68.6 completion percentage), including 32 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, and has 18,957 passing yards in his career to go along with 127 touchdowns and 60 interceptions.
