WATCH: Jason Garrett has some theories about Pythagoras

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

You can't blame Cowboys coach Jason Garrett for trying to instill some smarts in his squad. Even if he knows he'll probably end up being foiled by Google.

But check out his explanation for why he wants his squad to know about Pythagoras and all of his juicy theorems (H/T to Deadspin for the video).

Garrett isn't the first coach to think that geometry might be important as well. A guy named Sid Gillman once commissioned one of his assistants to speak to a professor of mathematics at San Diego State in the 1960s to talk about how to best work on his vertical stretch offense.

“We figured out the exact location a receiver had to be so when they ran patterns, they were the same distance from the quarterback all the time,” that assistant, Tom Bass, told me as I was writing my Sid Gillman biography.

All of which proves something I think we all knew in our hearts. Football is most definitely a mathematician's sport.
