Rex Ryan: Geno Smith had 'brutal' practice, might sit Saturday

If you read my Preseason Week One NFL Stock Watch (and if not, you should!) you saw Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith on the Bear market. (That's not good.) Part of that is Geno's ankle injury that he suffered during the his first preseason game, but still, it matters.

Clearly, it's causing some issues, as Rex Ryan said on Wednesday that Geno's practice "was brutal" and his "worst day." Ouch.

"It was brutal. It was Geno's worst day. I think, and obviously, the ankle's part of it, but ... way too many picks and things. Did not look comfortable today,” Ryan said. “Obviously he has to come back from it, he will come back from it. It was a bad day. Everybody, we've seen it, guys have bad days. But this was a really bad day for Geno.”

Rex said it was "not a good day for the offense" as a whole, so it's not like it was all Geno, who was way more enthusiastic about his play, stating that his brutal day was not a step down.

"Not one bit. It's been a step up," Smith said. "I've been getting better every single day and every single moment out here on the practice field is an opportunity to learn from it and get better from it. We all competee out there. That's what it's about. It's never about me. It's about every guy out there out there and field working hard. "

Of course, when asked what caused the interceptions he threw during practice, Smith only offered up reporters a chance to "watch the tape."

The next time the tape's rolling might not even include Geno -- Ryan said it "could be a possibility" that Smith sits for Saturday's preseason game against the Jaguars with Mark Sanchez getting the nod at starter.

"Well, I guess, we'll see how it goes,” Ryan said. “He's been out their practicing, working through things ... but that could be a possibility."

Smith is already losing ground in the battle to Sanchez to win the Jets starting job. His only saving grace at the moment -- and it's a good one! -- is that he's GM John Idzik's guy. It's always good to be the GM's guy.

But it doesn't really look like it matters a whole lot for Geno right now.
