St. Louis Rams linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar has been suspended for the first four games of the 2013 season after violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances, the league announced on Wednesday.

Dunbar was expected to be one of the Rams starting outside linebackers this season, but now he won't be -- at least for the first four games. Dunbar will miss a Week 1 home game against Arizona, consecutive away games at Atlanta and Dallas and then a Week 4 home game against the 49ers.

The six-year veteran started all 16 games he played in last season, his first year with the Rams. Dunbar was second on the team in tackles (115) in 2012, fourth in sacks (4.5) and tied for third in interceptions (2).

Dunbar's suspension should open up a chance for Will Witherspoon to start.

Although Dunbar is suspended for the first four weeks of the regular season, he can participate in both preseason games and preseason practices.

Dunbar joins Rams running back Isaiah Pead on the suspension list. Pead will be serving a one-week suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
