After only two preseason games, the Miami Dolphins coaching staff has apparently seen everything they need to see in the kicking department.

The Dolphins cut veteran Dan Carpenter on Wednesday, a move that all but gives the job to rookie fifth-round pick Caleb Sturgis.

Carpenter had been with the Dolphins since his rookie year in 2008 when he signed as an undrafted free agent.

"I would like to thank Dan for his contributions he has made as a member of the organization," general manager Jeff Ireland said in a statement. “For the past five seasons Dan has been a tireless worker on the field while devoting countless hours of his time off the field to the betterment of the South Florida community."

In five years with the Dolphins, Carpenter scored 535 points, the fifth-highest total in team history. Carpenter also hit a franchise-record 60-yard field goal in 2010 and was the AFC's kicker in the 2009 Pro Bowl.

The 27-year-old attempted two field goals during the preseason, hitting a 27-yarder and a 47-yarder. Both kicks came in the Hall of Fame game against Dallas.

The move means the Dolphins are going younger and cheaper at kicker. Cutting Carpenter for the 24-year-old Sturgis will save the team almost $2.7 million. Sturgis, who kicked at the University of Florida, has showed off his strong leg several times this preseason, including on Friday, when he hit a 58-yard field goal against Jacksonville.
