Victor Cruz on crutches, in walking boot, vows to play opener

By Ryan Wilson |

First there was concern, then relief and now, it seems, we've circled back. Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz left Sunday's preseason game against the Colts with what was later described as a bruised heel. The X-rays were negative and the hope was that he would be ready to play in the season opener.

And that's still the plan even though when Cruz met the media Tuesday he was on crutches and wearing a walking boot. Not exactly how you want to see your No. 1 receiver with the regular season three weeks away. Turns out, the accessories are just precautionary.

“Once the swelling goes down, I think I'll be okay," Cruz said, via NFL Network's Kimberly Jones. "Hopefully I can be ready before two weeks from now. I do envision playing against Cowboys in opener.”

Disaster averted (again).

Cruz signed a five-year, $43 million extension this offseason and he's quarterback Eli Manning's favorite target. With Hakeem Nicks working his way back into shape, the Giants are thin at wide receiver; Rueben Randle and Louis Murphy are listed as backups on the depth chart but they combined for just 46 receptions last season.
