Saints release OL Jason Smith, Rams No. 2 overall pick in 2009

The player picked behind Matthew Stafford in the 2009 NFL Draft is out of a job.

The Saints released offensive tackle Jason Smith on Wednesday, coach Sean Payton announced. Smith had only been with the team since signing a one-year deal in April.

Smith was expected to contend for the starting left tackle job, a job that appears to be going to Charles Brown, who's taken the majority of the first team reps in training camp. Instead of keeping Smith to backup Brown, the Saints decided to go with 2013 third-round draft pick Terron Armstead as the No. 2 left tackle.

Smith was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 draft, but the former Baylor lineman didn't last long with the Rams, the team that drafted him. After only three seasons, St. Louis traded Smith to the Jets just before the start of the 2012 season.

Smith spent one season in New York before the Jets cut him in February. It's been a rough week for the 2009er's as Smith becomes the second top-11 pick in the 2009 draft to be cut. The Bengals cut former Bills No. 11 overall pick Aaron Maybin on Sunday.
