Report: Packers to release QB Graham Harrell

The Packers will release backup quarterback Graham Harrell, according to various reports. The move comes one day after an uneven performance as Aaron Rodgers' backup in a preseason game against the Seahawks, and nearly three weeks after the team signed Vince Young to a one-year deal.

Harrell finished Friday's game 6-of-13 for 49 yards. Young looked sharp by comparison, completing 6-of-7 for 41 yards and a touchdown. Young also ran for 39 yards on three carries, including a long of 21.

Clearly, coach Mike McCarthy felt comfortable enough with Young's progress in recent weeks that Harrell became expendable. And apparently, the Packers have been fond of VY for some time.

Harrell is a former undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech who twice threw for more than 5,000 yards in college. He began his professional career in 2009 in the CFL. Released eight months later, the Packers signed Harrell in May 2010, where he spent part of the 2010 season on the practice squad. He was on Green Bay's active roster the last two seasons, but didn't play in a regular-season game until 2012. In four appearances last year, Harrell was 2-of-4 for 20 yards.
