The Giants' defense may have had its way with rookie Geno Smith in Saturday's preseason game, but it came at a price. Starting free safety Stevie Brown was on the receiving end of one of Smith's three interceptions, but he suffered a knee injury during the return. Brown had to be helped from the field.
"I feel bad for Stevie," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "He has been a tremendous addition to our team. The guy has another interception and then has that happen. ... We'll definitely miss him. But we'll continue. That is what we do."
The Giants were already without safety Antrel Rolle, who missed the Jets game with a sprained ankle, although he is expected to be ready for the regular-season opener.
Brown, a 2010 seventh-round pick of the Raiders, led the Giants with eight interceptions last season. Ryan Mundy, a free agent signed in the offseason, will likely replace Brown in the starting lineup.
