Jets release WR Braylon Edwards

If receiver Braylon Edwards needed a sign that his NFL career might be flat-lining, the Jets provided him with a large hint Monday.

That's because the team announced it had released the nine-year veteran.

While the Jets got some good news last week with Santonio Holmes, clearly the team's best receiver, coming off the PUP list, the list of pass-catchers behind him are players like the recently-signed Mohamed Massaquoi, Clyde Gates and Stephen Hill -- none of whom have produced much in their NFL careers.

Jeremy Kerley recorded 56 catches last season, but he's only entering the third season of his career.

Edwards, meanwhile, was a one-time Pro Bowler, and as recently as 2010, he recorded 53 catches for 904 yards and seven touchdowns for the Jets. But in the past three years, he's done stints with the Jets, Seahawks and 49ers, and he's stuck with none of them. Hint to Edwards: it's not like every front office is idiotic, right?

The one positive for Edwards, though, is this. He, unlike New Jersey governor Chris Christie, no longer has to worry about what the heck is happening in the Jets quarterback room.
