Hernandez has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Odin Lloyd and has been in jail since being arrested in June. However, before Hernandez went to jail, he participated in New England's offseason spring workout program. That participation triggered an $82,000 workout bonus that the Patriots have yet to pay.
The bonus money was due on Aug. 1 and has not been paid, according to FoxSports.com.
The $82,000 workout bonus is just a sideshow compared to what could also be on the horizon between the NFLPA and the Patriots. Hernandez is due $3.25 million in March 2014, a sum that makes up the final installment of the $12.5 million signing bonus Hernandez is due as part of the contract extension he signed in August 2012.
If the Patriots had kept Hernandez on their roster, it actually would've been easier for them to not pay him. According to FoxSports.com, a team has the right a recoup the prorated portion of a signing bonus if a player on the team roster is incarcerated. However, this rule doesn't apply to Hernandez because the Patriots cut him in June.
