New Orleans didn't waste any time bringing in a potential replacement for linebacker Will Smith.

The Saints have traded for 49ers linebacker Parys Haralson, according to the San Jose Mercury News. New Orleans was in need of a linebacker after finding out early Monday that Smith was lost for the season due to a knee injury suffered in the Saints 31-23 preseason win over Houston on Sunday.

In return for Haralson, San Francisco will receive a conditional 2014 seventh-round draft pick, according to the Sacramento Bee. If Haralson makes the Saints roster, the 49ers will get the pick.

Haralson had been in San Francisco since the 49ers selected him in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Haralson started 68 games in seven seasons with the 49ers.

The 29-year-old linebacker missed the 2012 season after tearing his triceps in the 49ers third preseason game. Aldon Smith replaced Haralson in the 49ers lineup and went on to record a franchise-record 19.5 sacks last season.

"He was a good mentor, taught me a lot and best of luck to him in New Orleans," Smith said.

Smith's backup will most likely now be rookie Cory Lemonier, a 2013 third-round pick out of Auburn.

Haralson will see his 49ers teammates again in November when New Orleans hosts San Francisco in Week 11.

This is San Francisco's second trade in a week. The 49ers sent wide receiver A.J. Jenkins to Kansas City last Monday in exchange for receiver Jonathan Baldwin.
