Pete Carroll told Russell Wilson he was starting while shooting hoops

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

This time about a year ago, Pete Carroll named Russell Wilson the Seahawks starting quarterback and the Seattle football world was forever flipped upside down.

We all know that story. But we didn't know the story of how Carroll told Wilson he was the new 'Hawks starter. And it turns out it's pretty amusing, as Wilson told the Dan Patrick Show via CoachingSearch.com that Carroll brought him out to the basketball court to let him know he'd be starting.

“I go into work that day. We had just played our third preseason game" Wilson said, setting up the scene. "We just had our meetings. About mid-day, around noon or so, I'm in the locker room and one of the equipment guys came in and said, ‘Hey Russ, Coach Carroll wants to see you.' I'm like, ‘Okay, is he up in his office?' He said, ‘No, he's actually outside shooting baskets.'"

That's a little bizarre. But the scene when Wilson got to the basketball court is perfectly Pete Carroll. Just a cool, silver-haired dude in his pleated khakis going behind his back by himself on the court.

“I was like okay (laughs)," Wilson said. "I walked outside and [Carroll is] draining 3-pointers, going behind his back, and doing Michael Jordan fade-aways. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what's going on right now. He's like, ‘You think you can beat me?' I'm like, ‘I don't know, coach.' He started talking and said I just want to let you know that you've done a great job thus far and I want you to continue to grow and I want to let you that you're going to be the starting quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks."

As much as the scene that Wilson painted cracks me up, it really does embody Carroll perfectly. He puts people -- especially his players -- at ease and he stresses competition. Both of those things are pretty clear from that story.

A couple of other nuggets from Wilson that gave me a chuckle:

On who controls the music in the Seahawks locker room:
"Either Marshawn Lynch, which is never good."

On Seattle running the read option:
"We don't really run it that much, it's more of just hand it off to Marshawn Lynch and make it look like we're going to," Wilson said.
