Aaron Curry was almost universally considered the "safest" pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Whoops: eight days before the 2013 NFL season kicks off, Curry announced his retirement.

The former Wake Forest linebacker was drafted No. 4 overall by the Seahawks in 2009 announced the news via his Twitter account.

"After a lot of prayer. Consulting with God. The best thing for my family and myself is to retire from the @nfl. I enjoyed it #DeliveredDefender," Curry's retirement message reads in full.

Curry played only 35 games for the Seahawks -- as a rookie he looked like part of a pretty impressive linebacking corps along with Lofa Tatupu and Leroy Hill. But in his third season after season a serious decline in play, Curry was traded to the Raiders for a seventh-round pick (!).

He started nine games for Oakland in 2011 but appeared in only two last year before being cut in November.

In May 2013, Curry linked up with the Giants but was a victim of roster cuts as New York worked to get down to the 75-man limit on Tuesday.

Wednesday he announced his retirement. We should probably go ahead and retire the draft phrase "safe pick" along with him.
