Ras-I Dowling's short career in New England appears to be over.

In a somewhat surprising move, the Patriots cut Dowling on Wednesday. In 2011, New England made the 25-year-old cornerback the first pick of the second round and 33rd overall selection in the NFL Draft.

Dowling quickly earned a starting spot New England's secondary -- he started the first two games of his rookie year -- but he was never healthy enough to stay on the field. Dowling missed the final 14 games of 2011 after rupturing his patellar tendon.

Things didn't go much better for Dowling in 2012. Dowling saw action in six games, but his season ended in October when he tore his quadriceps.

Dowling's release will be the first of many New England makes this week. Like all NFL teams, the Patriots have until Saturday at 6 p.m. ET to get their active roster down to 53 players.
