Victor Cruz returns to Giants practice

Though he was in a walking boot and using crutches when he said this in the middle of last month, Giants receiver Victor Cruz vowed to be ready for the season-opener vs. the Cowboys.

“Once the swelling goes down, I think I'll be OK," Cruz said at the time.

It appears now as if there's a real chance he'll make good on that vow, as Cruz practiced with his team Monday as it prepares for Dallas.

Cruz had been bothered by a heel injury that he suffered vs. the Colts in the preseason. He hadn't practiced until Monday. Coach Tom Coughlin told reporters that Cruz played about half of the snaps.

“I just want to play,” Cruz said recently. “But I understand how much my team needs me just to be out there as a catalyst to help us win, a player who knows the offense and is comfortable. I understand that I have to be out there for us to be at our maximum potential, to have our best chance to win.”

In July, Cruz agreed to a contract extension worth five years and $43 million.

In other news, defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul also returned to practice Monday. Last week, Pierre-Paul was taken off the PUP list, following offseason back surgery.
