Texans, LB Brian Cushing agree to terms on six-year extension

Linebacker Brian Cushing and the Texans have agreed to terms on a six-year extension that will keep him in Houston through 2018, a team source told CBS NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.

The extension is worth $55.643 million, according to, and includes $21 million in guaranteed money.

Cushing, the team's 2009 first-round pick (15th overall), missed the final 11 games of the 2012 season after suffering a knee injury on a peel-back block that has since been ruled illegal. Now, some 10 months later, he appears to be fully recovered as the Texans head into a Week 1 Monday night matchup against the Chargers.

“He's done good,” coach Gary Kubiak said last week, via the Houston Chronicle. "He's really good. … He needed a couple preseason games and I think he comes out of [the final preseason game] feeling very good about going into San Diego.”

Cushing, who was in the final year of his rookie deal, returns to a formidable defense that begins up front with defensive end J.J. Watt and features cornerback Johnathan Joseph (and, lord willing, Ed Reed) in the secondary. The Texans have won the AFC South the last two years and they're the preseason favorites to bring home the title again in 2013.
