Jets will start Geno Smith at QB

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

With Mark Sanchez's shoulder injury and with Geno Smith taking the Jets first-team reps at quarterback, this announcement from the team on Wednesday morning was certainly not a surprise.

Considering we don't know how long Sanchez will be out -- reportedly, his injury is more serious than we were told at first and he might miss several weeks -- this could be the end of his reign as the team's starter.

Even if Sanchez was the starter -- and it looked that way until his injury in the fourth quarter of a meaningless exhibition game -- it seemed as though Smith, taken in the second round of the draft, was the heir apparent.

Well, Smith's brief apprenticeship is over.

Earlier in the preseason, Smith suffered an ankle injury, but the team is confident that he's healthy and ready to play.

"That part was important for him to get those practice reps in as well, and I think his confidence physically is at a high level right now,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg told the team website. “He came out the other day and looked like he was 100 percent."

Said Rex Ryan: "Learning Marty's system, he really did a tremendous job, as did all the quarterbacks. I think he really fits the system. He's a guy who is very accurate with the football, he has good mobility in the pocket and he's adjusting to the speed of the game."

As for Sanchez?

"It's unfortunate that Mark was injured, obviously, but he is working extremely hard to get back,” Ryan said. “But he's just not ready right now. It's similar to last week -- we knew he wasn't ready then. He's not ready now and we'll see what the future holds as we move forward.”
