NJ Gov. Chris Christie has been Cowboys fan since 1971

Chris Christie was born in Newark and he's currently the governor of New Jersey. So it stands to reason that he's a fan of either the Jets or Giants, or because he's a politician, both.

Nope.

Christie's allegiances lie 1,500 miles to the southwest.

"I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan," the governor told NFL Network in a segment that aired Sunday morning. "I saw Roger Staubach play for the first time, and this was 1971, and I became a huge Staubach fan. And as a result, a Cowboys fan, and I've been one ever since."

How do Christie's constituents feel about that development? Exactly as you might expect.

"Oh, they hate it," Christie said. "Giants fans, obviously, are more hateful of my rooting interests, but, you know, I told them right from the beginning when I was running in 2009. You get asked those kind of questions and I didn't try to hide it. I'm a Cowboys fan, I'm proud of it, and you got to be true to the team you've been rooting for your whole life."

Christie, who said this summer that he does support the Knicks and Mets, also has a soft spot for Jets punching bag Rex Ryan.

Christie had Ryan's back in the wake of the coach's decision two weeks ago to play quarterback Mark Sanchez in the fourth quarter of a meaningless preseason game that led to Sanchez injuring his throwing shoulder. The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta got into it with Ryan at the postgame press conference (which brought us the Ryan two-step), prompting Christie to leap to Ryan's defense.

"Idiot," Christie said of Mehta during a radio appearance on WFAN. "The guy's a complete idiot. Self-consumed, underpaid, reporter. The only reason he's empowered is we're spending all this time this morning talking about Manish Mehta who, by the way, I couldn't pick out of a lineup. And no Jet fan really gives a damn about Manish Mehta."

And now we know at least one Cowboys fan does.
