Jets don't fear torn labrum for Mark Sanchez, despite reports

Jets backup quarterback Mark Sanchez was injured in what became a controversial moment late in the team's third preseason game after getting drilled by Giants defensive tackle Marvin Austin. And though the Jets have downplayed the injury, it's becoming apparent it's far more severe than they let on.

Shortly before Geno Smith was named the team's starter, word leaked out that Sanchez' injury was "more significant" than they thought. Some reports indicate that Sanchez has a torn labrum, however CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports the Jets don't believe that's the case.

Sanchez warmed up on Sunday in advance of the Buccaneers throwing left-handed, which certainly surprised some folks. According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, he did so because he has a partially-torn labrum on his throwing shoulder.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that Sanchez "dislocated his shoulder" when he was hit by Austin. Additionally, doctors "popped it back in socket" and he now has a "shoulder subluxation" and cannot play unless the shoulder stays in socket. That basically boils down to Sanchez having a dislocation plus an already partially torn labrum.

La Canfora reports that Sanchez will seek a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews.

Regardless, this is the Jets backup quarterback we're talking about. Sanchez is heading into what should be his final year with the team and it might not matter whether or not his shoulder is healthy when the football actually begins, provided Geno can hold onto the gig.
