It looks like Jets coach Rex Ryan won't have to worry about having a quarterback controversy this season, at least not one involving Mark Sanchez. Sanchez is likely to have surgery on his right shoulder that would cause him to miss the rest of 2013 season, according to ESPN.com.

Sanchez met with Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday and it looks like the star-crossed quarterback will have a procedure done on the labral tear in his right shoulder. Sanchez will take a day or two to decide if he wants to go through with the surgery.

Sanchez was injured in the fourth quarter of the Jets third preseason game on Aug. 24. The fact that Sanchez was playing in the fourth quarter of a preseason became a controversy and now it looks like Ryan's decision to play Sanchez could end up costing Sanchez the 2013 season.

The injury effectively ended the preseason quarterback competition in New York and Geno Smith was named the starter on Sept. 4. In his first game, Smith threw for 256 yards and led the Jets to an 18-17 come-from-behind win over Tampa Bay.
